Flipboard meets Amazon: Users shop stories they care about from tastemakers they trust.
My partner and I had the idea to for an app that helped making shopping less of a stressful and agonizing process and after many sketches and notes and conversations with advisors, we set out to build it. We came up with the name, I designed the logo and crafted the brand. Then, beginning with market research, I created wireframes, low-fi mocks and built a prototype to test with a small user group. From those findings, I designed each screen and every interaction. We outsourced the development and built our first version for the App Store. My partner and I sat in Starbucks downtown Palo Alto (down the street from Stanford) and asked those who fit our target demographic if we could buy them their coffee and ask them to download our app and use it in front of us. This face-to-face user testing proved to be incredibly valuable. We watched them download the app, go through the onboarding process, and see how they used it. Giving no direction and simply watching their path helped show holes and uncover insight that we could use. I took that insight and constructed some small but mighty tweaks to help guide users to the content and the products more easily. We rolled out new features as often as we could while iterating on the current version — such as shopping #hashtags, creating wishlists, and notifications of friends’ shopping behavior.
We were invited to be one of Twitter’s exclusive launch partners for their new collections feature. Consumers were able to browse rich collections from influencers they care about and get more information about the products or places they find interesting. Shopfeed was one of two dozen influencers including Demi Lovato Demi’s Picks, HBO - Game of Thrones #GoT Fan Favorites, Nike LeBron Elite collection, Target Swim & Sun Ready, and The Ellen Show Best of The Ellen Shop.
